Swiss - Serial or Parallel?

I played in a six-player private tournament that was set to Swiss System. Each game was two player. I thought all games might happen in parallel. Instead, we played a series of three-game rounds, waiting for the final pairing in each round to complete before the next round was scheduled.
Is that standard for Swiss or was it down to how the event organiser set it up?

That is how Swiss works. You can't play parallel in Swiss because the pairings for subsequent rounds depend on the results of the previous round. Round robins start all games in parallel because you're going to play everyone regardless of the result in any given game.

Thank you. I confused Swiss System for Round Robins.
