Board Game Arena

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've encountered this a couple of times so far:

An opponent reserves a hidden card from one of the piles on the left and immediately gets 4 to 6 stars/points.
I can't find anything about that in the rules.
Maybe it's a problem with the animation? Maybe they're actually buying a card they reserved earlier but the animation suggests otherwise?
Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't see any examples of this in your post.

I think they are buying a previously reserved card. At least it sounds like what I have experienced.

I've noticed this. At least it looks like this is what is happening from the animation.

And yet no one has provided any examples. I see no reason to believe this is happening at all.

And yet, still no examples have ever been provided that this has even happened one time.

It doesn't happen.

The player is BUYING a reserved card, thus gaining the card to the tableau and gaining the Victory points for the card.
This can be seen by viewing the game log, or by noticing that the opponent tableau has a new card.
