All players know: duel is quitely differ from 3-5 players formats.
And I think it is not fair to play this format as the main.
Most of Arena games are more exciting with 3-4 players. And it is harder to get first place in such kind of games, so more respectfully.

You can be a guru yourself if you just keep playing the game more frequently than most players

I have been a guru in multiple games overtime and I always choose two player because it takes just two dang long to finish a game with that many more players on turn based.

Does anybody know how to find the statistics of whether or not people are playing arena turn based or live more?

It's game specific surely, which is why it's handled the way it currently is. It's very over generalising to say most Arena games are more exciting with 3-4 players, as it totally depends what the game is.

Besides splitting Arena formats like this doesn't seem a good idea, as most games do not have the player pool to support it.

Yes, the two games are different. 2 player is almost always more skillful, as player politics are removed and variation ends up being reduced as a result, increasing the win rates of those who played better. Personally, I'd say that tend to make 2 player more exciting, while other players find lower skill to be more exciting, giving them the chance to win more often. As far as excitement in games goes you'll find all sorts of opinions on that. In any case, the voters for Arena seem to agree that 2 player is preferable more often than not.

Don't recall what they used to get the numbers, but last time I remembered talking about it players found real time was played much more than turn-based even in games we thought would favor turn-based players, such as Ark Nova.

I don’t think you can generalise as the OP has.

I wouldn’t want to play Heat : Pedal to the Metal with just two drivers. How dull.

How would you address some card games that require four to play?

Certainly, some games play well at two (or are made that way, like Backgammon), but I wouldn’t want a default position for ALL games.

Lost Ruins of Arnak is a gem at three player. Conversely, Azul is a gem (cutthroat!) at two.

Just become a guru(!!) and then help shape the Arena format. You don’t need to play Arena to be a guru. I’ve recently been made a guru on a less-played game despite an ELO below 100 and only playing simple “play now” games of it so far.
