With the Norwegians expansion there's an option of not playing with all the islands. I thought I read this would remove some islands at random, but it seems that it removes all the original island. Or does it just seem like that? I can't find the explanation of the options. Thanks for your help.

not sure how it is exactly implemented but should be at random, but you could try in solo

I know BGA is supposed to mimic the real game,but since it actually is online, it would be nice to have a variant where new islands could appear regarless of the islands taken.Because some islands never appear because they are on the back of other islands that are popular.

Not certain, but I believe the rule is something like you always use the new islands, and either none of the old ones (2 player), half the old ones at random (3 player), or just use everything (4 player). Definitely 2 player without all islands always just removes the old islands.

yeah standard rules is not random but expansion boards and base games added random with more players

Lay out the four new exploration boards such that the front side
(the side with the letter in the bottom right corner) is facing up.
Place them next to the action boards. Return the exploration
boards from the base game to the game box.

When playing with 3 or 4 players, add the revised exploration
boards from the base game, adding two (Either A or B as well as
either C or D) with three players, and all four with four players.

but yeah random A/B/C/D one each, one each+1 A/B, C/D, two each for 2/3/4 players would be cool though

My suggestion would be something I've done when playing at the table:

2-player with Norwegians expansion only: 4 random boards, but one of each letter
with the mini expansion: add 1 more random board of any letter.

3-player with Norwegians expansion with or without mini expansion: remove 2 random boards with different letters

We've found having different boards available makes the game more interesting by forcing players to adjust strategies to the boards. With 4-player this happens as the boards are more contested so you don't usually get to choose specifically what you want.
