So I proposed to abandon the game collectively (as we'd started without someone as they left at the last second - and it was their first game) and I've now got an exit penalty and had a score penalty?

Is that right?

(can't seem to find anywhere explaining what happens when you leave games - don't normally need to)

Strange -- did everyone agree to the abandonment, or did your turn time out while the proposal was going on?

As I pressed the button it jumped to the end screen.

No, this really isn't what should have happened. I assume you're talking about Spyrium 6524842, you apparently weren't kicked by the other player (you would have gotten the red clock penalty as well).
What seems to actually have happened is that you somehow misclicked and quit the game. If you convinced this is not what happened, you probably should list this problem as a bug. Maybe ask your opponent as to what happened from his side of view.

I know I pressed the right button (from what I saw) - and have reported it as a bug.

My only idea is if the screen shifted at the last moment (so I didn't see it) so I ended up clicking the wrong button?

I went from 8th player down to top 20 player - which is a real shame - as I wanted to help a new person play their first game (and it's the only game I'm any good at - consistently!)

Still it's all just games!
