Explain ELO?

Can anyone explain how ELO changes after each game are so different in this pairing, especially the last 3?

"When you win consecutively against the same opponent on a game, your ELO gains will gradually reduce. This encourages you to compete against as many players as possible."
That's pretty silly in arena mode when you don't choose opponents.
