Why "you cannot afford a card" - does it think I could have bought another?

I rolled a 12 on my turn, and placed a cube on the "claim up to three level 1 cards" spot.
Spent my money to buy a level 2 card normally.
Then I used the cube, and claimed three cards from level 1.
But then the message "no cards to buy" (or something like that" appeared at the top briefly, and "You cannot afford a card" in the game log. It's as if the game acted like I had another opportunity to buy a card on this turn, and I just couldn't because I didn't have enough money. But the reason I didn't have enough money to buy a card was that I'd already spent it to buy a card on this same turn.

Anyone know what's going on?

It might be giving you another buy opportunity, which you would have been able to use if your income was high enough, and there was a cheap enough card.Maybe that's a bug,but it's not really reportable as you didn't actually get to buy another card.

Why wouldn't that be reportable? I'd file it under a display bug or a suggestion.

I think you often have to use "cube" actions BEFORE spending money, but I'm not sure this is a rule in the gamebook.

Well, yes, that's exactly what it seems to be doing, as I described: It's acting like I have another opportunity to buy, I just can't afford any cards because I don't have enough money. My question is WHY does the game think I should've been able to buy another card (if I had more money)? That's what I don't get.

Why do you think that?

Also, even if it were true (I don't think it is as a general rule), how would it explain this situation?
