I normally say either 'gg' or 'thank you for the game' at the end of a game, but I don't know if I'm supposed to say anything when the opponent resigns or just leave them alone without saying anything. What do you think?

Some people think "gg" is just basic politeness and should be said after every game, others seem to consider "gg" to be the worst insult imaginable to receive after a loss. You really can't win whatever you do.
My policy is: I say "hello" or something similar at the beginning of a game (or at least I try, sometimes I forget ---). If I get a "hello" back, I also say goodbye at the end of the game, usually either with "gg" or "thanks for the game". If I don't get a "hello" back, I won't say anything at the end of the game.

Also, I consider it somewhat impolite when the opponent says nothing back after I say "Hello" or "Greetings".
Still, sometimes my opponent will not say anything, but then will say "gg" or "wp" after I win, in which case I'll say something polite. If my opponent ignores my greetings but then wins and say, "gg", that's kins of annoying. I might just ignore that, but usually I probably just say "gg" back.

Actually, I'm with you entirely. At worst, responding or not responding in chat it mildly impolite. It's certainly not getting worked up about. I appreciate a good "gg" at the end of the game, just like they taught us in little league.

Thanks guys! I understand that whether or not saying 'gg' or something similar at the end of a game is a contentious topic in itself. For the sake of my original question, let's assume that you are a person who normally says 'gg' at the end. Does this change when the opponent resigns instead of playing through?

It depends on how/when the resignation happens. In chess or backgammon, for example, if a player resigns when a check mate is unavoidable or victory is mathematically impossible, "gg" or not is unrelated to the resignation, just say it if you normally would.

I say gg, because people tend to only resign when they know you're going to win. I guess in the hypothetical scenario of someone resigning because something has come up might make it a bit different, but the only time I've seen someone resign is because the result was a formality.

I know this is not the subject, but it's the closest - whenever I lose I say nice or gg or something like that but almost never nobody acknowledge that (especially from one world region); Am I just too much of a snowflake that that really bothers me?

Turn-based or real-time? For turn-based games any communication is clunky.

I am very keen to respond when a losing player says gg or thanks for the game first because I think it exhibits nice sportsmanship, and I green thumb them to remember that I had this positive interaction.

And before anyone gets their knickers in a bind, just because I think saying gg or thanks first when you lose is good sportsmanship does not mean I think not saying anything is poor sportsmanship. The latter does not logically flow from the former.
