Arena Shouldn't be Light Speed

Light-speed variant is way too high-variance with too much depending on the quality of the first draw and less time overall for some of the more elaborate planned strategies in the game. At the very least, with such high variance, the ELO scoring should be gentler. When there's so much more variance, having hugely punishing penalties for 3rd places seems misguided.

I wonder if the variance of the first draw wouldn't also be mitigated by looking at data concerning pick rates of certain cards and win rates of certain cards picked on the first draw. The community already acknowledges that some cards are too powerful for competitive play; I wonder if some others are misplaced in a variant where going for very powerful level two cards early isn't a tradeoff between resources now and the risk of missing even if you skip a buy or two, but comes down to a lucky first draw.

The dead horse of elo can be beaten in the main forum, but be careful, you may get banned.

On the topic of lightning, most people prefer it in arena because you can play faster. You will get those games where someone starts with the 7-8-9 arrows, or the 4 income already up or the 6 income already up and it's tough. You can still beat them, it's just harder. Also all you got to do is play thousands of games and become a guru and you can vote what we play next season. Last season a ton of people whined about playing non lightning. It's a circle....or a cycle...it's something alright.

I disagree, playing without lightspeed takes away so much player agency at the start of the game.

I mean, call it 'player agency' if you wish, but it's clear there's a very obvious meta or small set of metas that predominate when so much gold is flowing in the beginning of the game. Some cards have a basically 100% pick rate and others when they're starting in the available level two cards have a 100% sell-out to try and get it first turn rate. The game is flatter with fewer strategic tradeoffs required.

Well, the Lightspeed variant can be very cruel and unbalanced, sometimes you know you are screwed from the very beginning, sometimes you are the one benefitting.

On the other hand, this whole game is basically a luckfest, where even the best strategies can be nullified by bad rolls.
And sometimes just the last guy with superheavy arrowed 11/12 and 8-doubling cube gets 50 gold and 25 VP in one roll and wins. You get games where 7 is rolled 5 times but 11 over 20x, and so on.

So, the Lightspeed just adds another layer of luck and chance. And because this whole game is not Barrage, but is basically built on luck, I do not see it as big issue. And I prefer the Arena games go faster.

Agreed. Without lightspeed, the beginning of the game often leaves me feeling powerless. Sometimes you get a horrible opening hand in LS but then there’s the challenge of deciding whether to try it with the “bad” cards or keeping your money and buying a 9 or 14 coin card right at the beginning.

^ This!

There are 18 other choices on the board if your hand is bad. In 3+ games, a card with a cost of 12 with 4 coins on red might propell you faster than a sector 4 or sector 6 production. Faster arena games means more people playing arena, in my opinion. I struggle to find matches as it is, no need to turn LS variant off.

I saw it mentioned above, but I'll reiterate: playing lots of matches and having a good reputation can turn you into a gameguru, and you get to vote on the next Arena options. I do not know specific stats, I was once a guru and the title was taken away after a week so I don't know exactly how it goes...
