would some people like to play with (or try out) personal/optional rules?
before the game start, a theme will be named (agreed on by the players), for which every clue must match. themes could be things like:
  • if nouns are used, they must be abstract (non-visible)
  • first clue in each round begins with any letter, next clue with next letter in the alphabet, next clue with next letter again (e.g. d e f or m n o)
  • only adjectives
  • only emojis
  • only maximum 4 (or 5) letter words
  • one of the three hidden words each round can be clued normally, the other 2 clues must refer to it (e.g. words are phone, bird, heat - phone gets clued by 'hand', bird by '(1) may make the sound', heat by 'overuse of (1)'
or a bit more vague themes (with the disadvantage of not totally clear/objective rule violations) like:
  • something most children (up to ~12 years old) like
for every clued word that does not follow the theme, there might be a penalty such as: the other team gets 1 free round where it can disclose the clued words without needing to use clues.

It's a great idea and I like the idea of "themed" clues in each round.

Interestingly, the Decrypto expansion Laserdrive has this exact feature with an extra red token.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/273 ... laserdrive
When you add Decrypto: Expansion #01 – Laserdrive to the base game, each round you draw a category card — movie titles, tourist attractions, words that begin with an A, etc. — and at least one of the clues that you give to your teammates must match this category. If all three of your clues match the category, then you receive a red laser token.

You can spend two red laser tokens to attempt to guess one of the team's hidden words. If you guess correctly, you receive a white token because you've intercepted their info — and collecting two white tokens wins you the game, so this expansion gives you a new way to work toward victory.

why does this not exist as an extension on BGA?

I imagine it would make the game much more interesting/ long term appealing to many players.
