What constitutes "Better" for the Auto-Select sector settings?

What is the logic of the "Auto-Select sector choice when: Better" option?
I'm always nervous to use it, worrying about how it handles the choice of income or gold, how it interprets arrows, etc

Also, you're Premium. If you're playing Space Base for such high stakes that you're literally "nervous" about what might happen in a normal game, you can set up a Hot Seat game and test it out without risking anything.

i never use that option, I just stick that auto select when there's no choice. That decision is part of playing to me, I only want to automate the process when there's no choice

Unfortunately it can't interpret arrows. You still have to click the sector when there are arrows involved even when the alternatives are strictly worse.
You'll never lose anything from using this option, it just speeds up the trivial choices between x and x+y.

It still only auto-selects for direct comparisons, e.g.:
- 2 coins vs 1 coin
- 3 coins vs 3 coins plus a cube/rocket/income
The moment they are not directly comparable, you still have to select. e.g.:
- 2 coins vs 1 coin plus a cube/rocket/income
As stated above, it also can’t cope with arrows, so if there is an arrow then you have to choose.
If you have the “increase the value of the combined dice”, then you will always need to choose as it won’t assume whether you want to use this ability.

You might be interested in my feature request, which would let you tell it to auto-confirm when the two options are identical, but still let you choose whenever they're different, regardless of whether it can tell what's better:

I'm sorry, I simply do not understand what you're saying in this bug report... at all.

I use this all the time, and don't worry, it's very conservative. I've never noticed it automatically making a selection where it wasn't obvious what was better, and there have been plenty of times where I've wondered why I still have to select between two options one of which is "strictly better" than the other (eg 6 coins vs 4 or whatever, with hothing else involved - this usually comes up when one of the options involves arrows).

It's not a bug report, it's a feature request. I think it's very clearly stated: "We should also have an option to auto-select and confirm when two actions are possible and they are exactly equal."
That's it. In addition to the three auto-confirm options we currently get, we should also have that fourth one.

I dont know, but would have expected that the "autoselect only one option available" would have covered that scenario?
