Don't get it...

Maybe I have misunderstood.... If I don't have any markers I have to take the card, and then I go again, right? But since I don't have any markers I am forced to take the next card as well. Wouldn't this go on until the deck runs out and I have probably lost...?

If that was correct - the game would be broken and nobody would play it.
In the game you could never ever start your turn with 0 tokens on the active card. If so, the player on your right did something wrong. So when you have no tokens, you pick 1+ from the active card
