As I understand it, there are two timers relevant to a game.

Each player has their own clock, which shows under their name.

There's also an overall game clock, the maximum time a game can take. Is this visible anywhere and I've just missed it? I think it's not as simple as adding the game time to the start time - if a game with a maximum time of six days starts at 3pm on the 3rd of July I don't think it necessarily ends at 3pm on the 9th.

Am I correct in that, and can the remaining game time be seen anywhere?

Only tournament games have a maximum duration, but this is represented by each player having a maximum duration in which to complete their moves and the game, and those durations never get more time added to them.

For real-time and turn-based there is no maximum game time, simply each player has a turn timer (of varying lengths) in which to complete their next turn. They will receive an add-on of time each turn, up to the maximum turn time for that game/speed. This method will govern the game length, although a player can run their turn timer negative and, unless another player ejects them from the game, the game will take longer than expected. Some games with no fixed length of turns (say Backgammon or Can’t Stop) could last an infinite duration.

So in a tournament game is it really that simple? If there's a game in a tournament with a 7 day maximum game length, which starts at 9pm on the 1st if the month, and it didn't end earlier, it'll end at 9pm on the 8th?

I think I may have misread some things earlier.

Yes. And if it is a two-player game. Each player will get 3.5 days of thinking time on their clock (or 42 hours if playing hours are set). The winner will be the player with more time on their clock at the end of the 7th day (assuming it doesn't end another way).

100%. I've taken a turn in a game only to have it hit it's time limit and time out on me an hour or two later. When I checked, it lined up with the time the game commenced (plus however many days was the max).
