Why is there a Max Conservation/Appeal in the game?

I got to be honest here, I got the shorter end of the stick in this situation.

I know it's super rare, but I maxed out my CP at the end of the game... and 6 CP (18 points) went to the drain and I end up losing the game by 3 points. Also the first game where I put out all my cubes haha

I guess my question is, why is there a Max Conservation/Appeal in the game? I know it's written in the rulebook, and this is purely an unfortunate/unlucky case for me... But, why...?

The physical game has tracks for CP and appeal, and those tracks are finite length. Presumably it was easier to have the rule be that when they're maxed out you can't get any more, rather than trying to have an ugly score calculation for that specific case.
