Hello all

Just wanted to share my joy over reaching Top 40 Elite League and Top 6 Global in 60 games.

Special thanks to Slavella, AVTactics, kuzestanx, Falzano, and countless others for their forum posts, in which I learnt a lot of strategy from.

My takeaway is that Arena with HighNoon/A Fistful of Cards is actually more strategical and reduces the luck and random factor. Even though the positioning and drawing of the cards are still random, you are
1. Able to see the next expansion and prepare for it, and counter the opponent's potential moves.
2. Able to synergize with teammates even better
3. Able to channel even more powerful plays, and rewards planning a move in advance
4. Stimulated to play more conservatively, as many expansions penalize a player without sufficient cards in their hands.

I would like to argue that the game mechanic of positioning determines how the game goes. The cards you draw is secondary. If you are on the left of sheriff, you often find yourself jailed and duelled against extensively no matter what your role is. Having the manual choice for characters on also increases the strategic factor and reduces the random chance of you drawing Vulture Sam in 4 player mode.

A factor not as extensively delved into in this forum is the personality of the person, I feel. Some players, no matter what their role is, tend to go all out, leading to the herd effect - in which a player is eliminated before the first round ends and the results are prematurely finalized. Moreover, it is now common for outlaws to manipulate the sheriff/renegade by attacking other outlaws/deputy, leading to the deputy being attacked instead.

Finally, even if Bang! is such a luck based game, in luck there is strategy. Luck means there are attributes and events happening beyond your control, but as Slavella and many other pro players pointed out, you can facilitate the environment, and even calculate the odds. As such of a coin flip or dice role, overtime the chance becomes a percentage that you can exploit, and it would be really helpful if anyone can calculate the odds of each expansion. I know it depends a lot on context but outliers generally do not affect the majority of games played.

Finally, I am planning to collate a megathread listing all the strategies and hidden/advanced mechanisms in Bang! that I feel even most Elite players rarely exploit. Please feel free to add to it (or offer constructive criticism)!

Let's see if I can reach both the All Time and Current Season leaderboard in under 150 games total.

Keep in mind that Bang has higher luck/variance than most games due to being more than 2 players on top of all of the randomness of drawing cards, player position, and random decisions due to hidden information. While Bang has decisions determined by skill, their effect on the game is only a small part of it. You will drop to the bottom of the rankings due to things that weren't your fault and other players will sail to the top on blind luck. Even the best players struggle to remain above 100 rating, the bare minimum, during bad streaks. So if you intend to keep playing Bang don't let that discourage you. Anyone who plays a lot of games watches their ratings go up and down from the higher spots to the lowest regardless of skill. The highest ratings are usually for lucky streaks such as new accounts using their high k factor to get more rating for their lucky streak or cheaters using another account to boost themselves. I have gotten many users penalized for cheating simply by looking at the top spots and noticing the common patterns, and there are several more to weed out if I come back to paying a bit more attention to Bang.

What are your core decisions during the game that helped you achieve it?

Firstly, keep in mind your character's hitpoints, ability, and finally your role. Then. keep in mind the number and kinds of cards in your hand. It is actually quite beneficial to store up any types of cards other than Bang! Missed! (kept at 1/2 depending on how likely you will be targeted.) Also, it is okay to play against your role as long as the decision makes sense in the long term.

I'll still maintain that the expansions actually add strategy to the game and reduce the randomness of the game mechanics. The mechanic serves as both a deterrent and a catalyst for more powerful, unrestrained plays, but also incentivizes players to plan beforehand given that the next expansions is also revealed.

Today I made the mistake of too strictly following through with my role's duty and per standard procedure eliminated Outlaw 1, Deputy, Outlaw 2 then Outlaw 3. However, I was faced with a full-powered sheriff instead of a weakened one. I also underestimated the beer buildup of Outlaw 3, preventing me from using Sniper against the sheriff effectively. At the end, I lost decisively as Suzy 1 on 1 against Bart. If only I had attacked sheriff and not permanently weaken Outlaw 3 to the extent where they hesitate to attack.

Long story short, the morale of this game is to preventing overextending your position as the renegade in the renegade-outlaw-sheriff complex. As renegade, you should treat this situation by impersonating what the sheriff would do in the sheriff-deputy-renegade complex, and weaken both opponents equally.
