[Feedback] A suggestion to enhance Heat Mode strategy

Hi everyone,

I've been thoroughly enjoying the Tekken: The Board Game demo on BGA and I'm really impressed with how well it captures the feeling of the video game.

I have some thoughts on the Heat Mode mechanic and would like to propose a small change for consideration.

Currently, if an attacker uses Heat Mode and their attacks are successfully blocked, the combo simply ends, but the defender doesn't receive a Punishment Token. This feels a bit like a "no-risk" move for the attacker, as there is no penalty for a failed combo.

To add more strategic depth, I would like to propose this rule:

"When an attacking player's moves are blocked two times consecutively while in Heat Mode, their turn immediately ends, and the defending player receives a Punishment Token."

This change would:

Introduce risk for the attacking player, forcing them to be more strategic with their card choices.

Reward skillful defense and give the defender a meaningful objective beyond just "surviving."

Maintain the aggressive nature of Heat Mode, as a single mistake would not end the combo.

I believe this would make the gameplay more balanced and exciting for both players. What do you all think?

Thanks to the team for an excellent game!

Hi

The change is very interesting.
At Go On Board, we strive to stay true to the source material. We have a deep-rooted respect for the licence we have. There are many examples in culture where someone takes inspiration from a cultural work and creates their own interpretation, and this is received in different ways. We stick to the source material, and Heat is a mechanic from TEKKEN 8, and we tried to reproduce the way Heat works as faithfully as possible (of course, a different company makes it work differently, but the feeling is the same).
But as they say, there's no Bouard Game Police Force (BGPF), so you can introduce as many house rules as you want. Your idea sounds very interesting.

Hi,

Thank you for the quick and insightful response. I completely understand and respect your design philosophy of staying faithful to the source material. It's one of the main reasons I'm so excited about this project.

As a long-time player of the Tekken video game series, I wanted to point out that even in the original game, while Heat is a powerful offensive tool, it is not without risk. A skilled defender can punish a reckless Heat rush. Getting blocked consecutively can lead to a reversal or a punishment, which adds a layer of depth and strategy for both players.

In my opinion, incorporating a minor risk/reward element would make the board game experience feel even more faithful to the spirit of the original game.

Thank you again for your time and for listening to the community. I look forward to the final game!

Best regards,

That sounds nice and very interesting, i'll probably play like that when I get the board game
Like you said, there's no risk involved when you use it, and it doesn't feel "good" at all.
