How is the amount of XP awarded for a tournament determined?

I have noticed that the tournaments tend to max out at 300XP but I have seen several that have less than 300XP, some even have 0XP. I have never hosted a tournament but I was toying with the idea of starting to. When I went through the setup it didn't give me an option to assign XP for the winners.

Can anybody elaborate? I searched the forum and read the FAQ on the site but can't find anybody talking about this.

We discuss things like this in the Tournaments forum. See this post, for example: Experience Points & Tournaments. It's not's surprising that you can't find it because "XP" and "points" are both stop words in the forum search engine, and while you can use "tournaments" as a search term, it obviously won't narrow things down very much in the Tournaments forum. I knew that thread existed and it still took me a while to find it.

The factors seem to be number of players and the elo of the players. I.e., a 150 elo player joining a tournament will increase the xp less than a 300 elo player joining. Every player is a + factor, so it'll never go down if someone joins. The difficulty/length of the game is also a factor as someone mentioned.

The cap of 300xp is ridiculously low. A tournament will hit the cap unless you have an abyssmal signup rate.

Yes, in reality the cap should be much higher than this as the achievement of winning a tournament is far higher than this. Like arguably the cap should be about 100x this.

Not all games are popular enough to have 100+ people sign up for a tournament, or even 64. What may be "abysmal" for Azul or Ticket to Ride could be a very strong turnout for more niche games.

For example, in the game "Onitama" in order hit cap you'd probably need more players register for a tournament than there are in the entire Arena for that game.
