Are Hard mode and Choice option compatible?

We have played a few times with both of options set, and always in place where couldn't have won unless the the cards were in a different order or had made a different choice so early in the game when we didn't have enough information.
Easy Mode and Choice is doable, as is:
Hard Mode without Choice
But Hard mode AND Choice seems only winnable if the cards are shuffled in your favor, and you make some incredible lucky picks early on. It also seems there are shuffles where you would just lose no matter what. If 2 same cards are late in the deck with a guard, and the 3rd was at the top, any early discard would basically doom the game without you knowing. (and not having enough information to avoid it).
Just wondering... should those modes not be played together?
