I was getting crushed.. or was I? I decided to have fun and give it my best effort. You never know what bonus card your opponent is holding!

With all the expansions, this sort of play is more common (I once scored 60 points in my final two plays with the North Island Kiwi and another big-time bonus card bird which drew the endangered species protector bonus card).
But in just the base game, this is the most exciting play I've seen.
