I'm looking at this Heat Tournament https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=490265 - It states that the Championship is 'Season 1961 (3 races)' - Does that mean that players will be playing through the entire 3 race series, or that they will be playing a single random race from the 1961 season?

From the tournament settings page, I feel like it's set to be the full season, but when looking at tournaments which are in progress using this setting, it appears that players are only racing in single races. This match, for example, is 70% of the way through, but nobody has scored any championship points, there's no special race conditions, and no indication of where that single race sits within the full championship season https://boardgamearena.com/3/heat?table=756294575

Sorry, I feel a bit dense asking this question, as I'm fairly certain the obvious answer is the correct one. But I don't want to waste my time or anyone else's by entering tournaments where I feel that it would be unlikely for me to be able to complete the game within the allotted time.

The table you linked is in Beginner mode, not in championship mode, so championship setting is ignored. If you set mode championship, then yes a game will be the 3 (or 4) races of the championship.

It's not the developer's fault but the Heat tournament settings are a mess to understand unless you really know what each setting means.

All that matters to whether it's Championship or not is the "mode" in the middle between turn-based mode and expansion. If this is set to Standard like the tournament you have linked it's not Championship and all subsequent Championship settings are irrelevant. If it's set to Championship then it's Championship.

Similarly look out for the first circuit option is what is relevant if the game has the expansion turned off, the second circuit setting is what will be used if the expansion is turned on (and it's the same for the Championship settings at the bottom, the first one is if expansion is off, second is if the expansion is on). The first garage module is what is used if the game is set to Standard mode, the second garage module setting is what is used if the game is set to Championship mode.

Note Season 1961 is just the default setting, the creator hasn't touched it because it's not a Championship tournament, but if it was, yes, you'd be playing Season 1961 every round of the tournament.

As another aside I would avoid Championship tournaments, they always end in tears. It's virtually impossible to complete Championship tournament rounds within the maximum possible time frame of 30 days, so all the rounds go to time, most games do not complete, and are decided on time. The exception is if it's 2 player, but if it's like 6 player Championship I would avoid, it's just not realistic to complete 4 6 player races inside 30 days in a tournament setting, when I can tell you that at 5-6 players tournaments that are Standard one-off races take 2-3 weeks in the early rounds, for one race.

Okay, that makes sense too. So not every tournament creator is obsessed with 1961, then?

That's exactly why I was planning to avoid. I'm checking my PC/phone every hour or so to check whether I've got turns to play, but even then, I wouldn't fancy my chances of getting through a full season. It's a shame that the time frame can't be set per race.
