I signed up for a tournament last spring...now I keep getting enrolled automatically...if I don't keep up with it I get penalized...how do I quit?

First off, I'm sorry because that is a horribly configured tournament. There is no reason the first round needed to be 20 rounds. To withdraw, go to the tournament page for that tournament https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=346606 and click on the bright red button in the upper right that says "Withdraw from the Tournament."

You will still need to finish the game you're currently in or you will get a penalty. But you won't be entered in future rounds.

Is it possible to leave a tournament, I allready lost? I want to change my nickname and thats not possible, but I dont see the red button.

If you've already been eliminated, then you can't withdraw. The tournament will end when it's fully finished.

What are people's opinions on leaving tournaments?

Personally, I'm lenient with it in most cases. I mean, if there is a big Swiss system tournament with lots of players, no one is gonna notice that someone dropped out between two games. It doesn't change anything to the experience, and it doesn't seem to cause any glaring fairness issue.

There are some cases where it could be problematic. For example, if someone leaves a round robin tournament after having completed some games, then this creates an unequal situation for the other players, since some will have faced that player, while some will be handed an automatic win. If the person drops out before completing any game though, then it doesn't cause any issue, this is exactly the same as if the tournament had N-1 players.

Another possible issue, not about fairness this time but rather the quality and integrity of the experience, is if for example someone drops out of an elimination tournament between their semi final and their final game. Once their would be opponent reaches the final, they would automatically win the tournament since the other finalist forfeited. It wouldn't be very satisfying for anyone to see a tournament end in such way.
