Self-expel?!?

I was playing someone who was running out of thinking time and admitted to the fact that they were "still thinking". Time ran out and it looked like they disconnected. I clicked the expel button and instead it put MY name up. My connection was fine. Their connection came back online and asked if "I was still there" then I got expelled. I got hit with two penalties.
I am absolutely sure the other player did something with the connection. I'm not sure how, but they were acting extremely suspicious in the chat and the timing when it looked like I was on the way to win made it more suspicious. I don't know if anyone else has encountered this. It was extremely messed up. Over 1000 games on here and this is the first time it happened.

I'm very surprised you've played this much and have never encountered the somewhat frequent phenomenon of it looking like your opponent's clock is running, whereas it is actually your turn. This is a display error with your browser being out of sync with the server. No one hacked you or disconnected you as someone else recently asserted. The golden rule of BGA is if your opponent has been playing regularly, then seems to have stalled, always refresh the screen to make sure what you're seeing is real. As it says in the FAQ:
What can I do if I have an issue with the website?
Most issues on this website should be solved with a simple web page refresh (or 'F5').
The problem is that you can't tell for sure if it is a problem on your end or if your opponent is really playing slowly. But there's never a downside to simply refreshing to be sure.

No one is hacking the system to control 1 very low rated game. Far more likely a glitch like the one previously noted where a player sees the other clock running when in reality that turn already ended, which refreshing fixes. I've only had it pop up a handful of times over the course of a decent number of games, so it seems pretty infrequent, but it does occur.

The misunderstanding lies in the fact that the clock you see is managed on the client side. So if your device can’t communicate effectively with the server (due to your connection or a problem with servers or a bug), you see the clock that was active at the moment of disconnection continue to run, but it doesn’t necessarily reflect the actual state of the game on the server, which is the authoritative one
