I dont understand how to figure out what version of a game I was in. I thought I was playing regular checkers but the opponent was jumping backwards. How was that possible?
How can I try to figure out what is happening without getting penalized while doing so?
Beginning to question this app.

It depends how you are joining your games. If you're joining automatically, you need to make sure your preferences are set in a way that avoids variants/options you don't want. How you do that depends if you're joining via the old lobby (Play Now) or new (game pages). If you're joining manually (only possible via Play Now), options chosen by the table creator are displayed on the table.
It would be easier to help you if you explained what you were doing that's not working for you (ie. how you joined the table) and what you want to happen instead. Not being a player of checkers on BGA, I'm not sure which variants would match what you're looking for (which may also be a question for the checkers-specific forum if you're not sure either).

You can see the settings of the game table that you are joining. This can be seen the moment you click ready, you need to look at the top of the screen, just to the right of the middle. Checkers is not a premium game, so you can create tables yourself and choose the settings you want. In your last game, you played English checkers.
It's interesting that in all the versions of checkers that I know, you can hit backwards.
