I understand why I lost points from an elo perspective

That's normal, you only beat one player. If you had more players in the game, you would not lose points being joint 1st. But you can still lose points in a 7 player game and finishing 2nd. Despite beating 5 players, one player that beats you causes you to lose more points than you get from the 5 players that you beat. That's exactly how ELO system works. When you move your mouse over the elo numbers at the end of the game, you see more details on why each player scored exactly how the scored.

Sometimes it is bitter: you can be 1st in 3-4 games in a row but then one 2nd place finish knocks you down more than you advanced on the 1st place finishes. And that can happen even on 5 player games, if your ELO is around 500 and your opponents are 300 or lower.
