In BGA you cannot activate your lantern before placing the die (and it can be helpful to collect coins first and then have more options for you die). In the rulebook there seems not to be any mention that the lantern has to be activated after placing the die. In fact, taking the die from the bridge and placing the die is separated in two actions so it seems that the lantern can be activated after the first action (just taking the die). Also, the reference card shows the lantern in the first step before placing the die. Is this a bug in BGA?

In the rulebook, placing a die on a space (and paying coin if needed) is step 2 of using the dice. Gaining the lantern bonus is step 3. There is no ambiguity here.
