Handicap Games?

It would be nice if there were a way to play handicap games (where Gote is missing some pieces). This might ease the introduction of the game to new players. Right now, I have a friend whom I'm teaching, but we can't play on BGA because of the lack of handicap options. An even game would not be as instructive, I fear. Thoughts?

I don't know how the pieces move in Shogi, but:

In chess,
1. Nf3 Nf6 2. Nd4 Ng8 3. Ne6 Nf6 4. Nxd8 Ng8 5. Ne6 Nf6 6. Nd4 Ng8 7. Nf3 Nf6 8. Ng1 Ng8
is a way of giving queen odds, and most kinds of odds are possible with the same approach.

Is something similar possible in Shogi?

So in "friendly mode" it is possible to play handicap games. In Go as well?
How do I get to "friendly mode"?
