"This forum is not read by BGA staff. It's better to post a suggestion in the suggestion forum"

I see this posted a lot in response to complaints and suggestions.

Generally, I agree. Until today.

I posted one (possibly my first). Within 6 hours, it was buried 100 posts deep. I had to click "show more" 4 times just to find it.
Meaning, very few people actually see them. What's the point?

The point is even fewer people (who can do anything about it) will see it in the forum.

True.

I remember an old skit from my Cub Scouts days. A guy is looking under the streetlamp for the pocket knife he lost. Gradually, all the other scouts join in. Eventually one asks, "Where did you drop it?" and the kid responds, "Way over there, next to me tent."

"If you dropped it over there, why are you looking here?"

"Because this is where the light is."

Kind of the same (faulty) rationale for posting BGA requests in the forum. Sure, it's hard to get noticed when filing it through the correct channels, but it's absolutely impossible to get them to notice it somewhere that they don't even look.

That is a good skit/anecdote/allegory or whatever the best word is. :)

I realize this and knew this when I posted. I suppose it was my indirect of suggesting that when saying this to others, it might be helpful to add, "most likely no one will see it there either, and even if it gets 1500+ upvotes over a period of years, it still might not be implemented."

The issue is that on some rare occasions they will pop into a thread here to address a site bug we're discussing. That's great when it happens, but it leads to an unfounded expectation that this is the first and only place you should post about site problems.

I used to say words to the effect of "don't hold your breath" in responses to posts in the Suggestions sub-forum, especially when it relates to something that has literally been discussed for years. Some call it "managing expectations," but it could also be considered "dashing hopes."

Either one works :)

I just assume no BGA stuff would care about our complaints either way.

So getting more people to reading our complaints, even if nobody can do anything about it, is a win for me.

Or, to use the anecdote: staying under the streetlamp absolutely does not help with finding the pocket knife, but at least it's easier to socialize a bit there ;)

By all means, use the forums to discuss between users, that's what they're for.
