Board Game Arena

I wanted to share this game because I think it's a fun example of how Wingspan can reward you in unlikely ways.

My starting bonus card was Rodentologist (2 VP per rodent-eating bird). Not typically a bonus card to build a game around... rodent is a tough food type to accumulate.

In R1 I was able to play Burrowing Owl (rodent-eater, star nest). In R2 I added Red-Tailed Hawk, Mississippi Kite and Eastern Screech-Owl, giving me 4 rodent-eating birds a Rodentologist bonus at +8 VP.

I had Eastern Screech Owl in the 2nd slot of my forest, and typically ESO's power of rolling dice to cache a rolled rat is usually, well, lame... but in Round 4 Megascops asio would be my talisman.

In R3 I played Spotted Owl to Forest to add +2 my Rodent bonus, and one of the bonus cards it drew was by pure luck Large Bird Specialist, worth 3 VP for 4-5 and 6 VP for 6+... perfect synergy with Rodentologist. At this point I had 3 large birds on the board... would need 1 more large to get the lower bonus and 3 more larges to max it out at 6.

I drew Black-Crowned Night Heron (9-point bomb, 112cm, and eats rodents) to go with Golden Eagle (8-point bomb, 201cm, and eats rodents) already in my hand. If I could play both of them my Rodentologist would be at +14 VP and my LBS would be at the lower bonus of +3 VP. At this point, I would love to get one more large to max out LBS at +6 VP but with only 8 turns left in the game and my current food total being only 1 fish and 1 worm, it looked improbable. Then I drew Common Loon... the final large bird I'd need.

Opponent finished R3 and started R4 playing 2 high VP birds (+8 VP and +6 VP) and the score was opp 56, me 49.

That brings me to R4 T1 (move 133 in the replay):

My food:
-1 fish
-1 invertebrate

Birds in hand I wanted to play (but assumed I wouldn't draw enough food for):
- Common Loon (would use all of my food and would get me to 4 large birds and the lower +3 bonus points from Large Bird Spec.)
- Golden Eagle (would require 3 rodents and would add +2 to my rat bonus and get me 1 bird closer to the +6 large bonus)
- Black Crowned Night Heron (would need 1 worm, 1 fish, 1 rodent and would +2 my rat bonus AND advance my large bonus to 6)

Turns remaining, in which I hoped to draw food for AND play 3 expensive birds: 5

Score:
- Me: 49
- Opponent: 56

My odds of winning:
- I don't know, I'm not great at math, but they don't seem great

Here's where it gets good (and where Eastern Screech Owl went into beast mode).

R4 T1
I play Common Loon to Wetland, paying my last 2 food tokens and 1 egg. Score is me: 54, opp: 56.

R4 T2
I have no food, yet over the next 4 turns I want to play 2 birds that will require 4 rodents, 1 fish, and 1 worm. Seemed like a long shot, but I had no other viable option... I had not built any kind of end-game point engine. I take 2 worms from the feeder, then pay one of my junk bird cards for a third food... reroll and pick up a rodent.

Enter Eastern Screech Owl. His power will allow him to roll ONE token for the 1-in-6 chance of rolling a rat. BAM, he rolls a rat and caches it, then Red-Bellied Woodpecker draws a seed for me.

R4 T3
Opponent has just point-bombed me with an 8-point Atlantic Puffin, which also allowed opp to draw a 3rd bonus card. Score is now me: 55, opp: 63.

I've got some food: 1 seed, 2 fish, 1 rodent. Not enough to cobble together Golden Eagle's 3 rodents, but I could combine the seed and a fish to pay BCNH's worm+fish+rat. Nah... I'll take my chances on the feeder again. Gained the 2 worms in the feeder, discarded another junk bird for a third food draw which again triggers a reroll... and just like in R4 T2 I managed to reroll a rat, which I took.

Eastern Screech Owl gets another roll with the same odds: there's only 1 die to roll, so 1-in-6 chance of rolling a rat... BAM, he hits it again for another cached rat and +1 VP.

With Red-Bellied Woodpecker's final draw of a seed, I now had just enough food to play Golden Eagle and Black Crowned Night Heron in my final 2 turns.

R4 T4
In opponent's R4 T4, they laid eggs. The R4 goal was birds with eggs in cavity nests; I had 1 qualifying bird (Burrowing Owl's wild nest had 4 eggs). Opponent had one bird with a cavity nest and on R4T4, they put an egg there... but opponent overlooked the wild nest in their Wetland. If opp had put an egg there, they would have swung the R4 goal by 3 points in their favor.

On my R4 T4, I played BCNH. Score is me: 63, opp: 66.

R4 T5
Opponent lays eggs again and has one final opportunity to break our R4 goal tie and drop my R4 goal bonus from 5 to 4 while raising theirs from 5 to 7... but again, opp didn't see the empty star nest in Wetland.

On my R4 T5, I played Golden Eagle, paying the last of my food (1 rat, 1 worm, 2 seeds and 1 fish) plus an egg.

Final score: me 95, opp 90.

Conventional Wingspan wisdom says build an engine early and extract value late. I ignored that and built a strategy around collecting rat eaters... typically a recipe for a mediocre game at best.

The whole thing hinged on the birdfeeder cooperating just enough, Eastern Screech Owl delivering two clutch 16.7% shots in a row, my opponent failing to see a play that would have meant 3 more points, and an avalanche of bonus points that had no business working.

Seems like a pretty standard gain lots of cards from Yellowthroat, got more food from Woodpecker, and with a common powerhouse bonus card in the form of the Rodentologist. Having the opponent give you a card earlygame with American Oystercatcher was also nice. A lot of mistakes lowered the score, like not getting the second Forest bird down sooner, which reduced the food they got, but those numerous powerhouses for an incredible hand still added up to make a solid score. I think with that hand there was a shot at going for triple digits.

I consider rodentologist a good bonus card. Starts scoring with 1 qualifying card and has high potential for upper-end scoring. Goes well with other strong bonus cards (as you saw in the game you described), and tends to go well with birds that already have a decent point-to-food ratio.

Even if you only score 4 points with the card, that's still a decent result. I have many games in which I score 4 or less with my starting card.

I like that you noticed the early gift via American Oystercatcher. When the game started, of course I had in mind drawing the two rodent eaters in the opening tray. Then opponent played AO and picked up one of them and left it in the offering for me... probably thinking it would lessen my chances of seeing a favorable card from AO.

I was disappointed with Rodentologist in recent games. It's still a good bonus card that I hold above many others, but it didn't perform so well if I didn't have any cards in my starting hand. I had a choice between her and viticultiralist twice, and I chose the second one both times and didn't regret it.

Strong disagree. I think it's a pretty good bonus card, maybe not the best but definitely in the upper half. First of all, it just gives you extra points for each qualifying bird, it's not one of those cards where you play just one too few and lose out on the points. Secondly, it has no upper limit, so you can score >8 with it, unlike a lot of cards that top out at 6, 7, or 8. If I _start_ right rodentologist, my odds of getting 8 or higher are pretty decent, since I'm looking for those birds for the whole game. Especially there's one in my starting hand, which there is pretty often.

When I start with rodentologist, if there aren't several rodent eaters already available, I emphasize wetland birds early to allow me to draw a lot.
