Can I join games while waiting for an inactive username?

I went to change my username and the one I chose is attached to an inactive account. It said it would assign it to me in 15 days if they did not respond or object.
I had to leave all game tables to try to change my name. Do I need to not be in any games for 15 days to get assigned that new username? Or is the "don't be in any games to change your username" only to initiate it?
