What do you think when someone puts "gg" into the chat before the game is over?

I've played some opponents who put "gg" into the chat when they realize they will win the game but before the game actually ends.

I don't like it and it seems like bad sportsmanship to me.

Am I being unreasonable? Has anyone else had this experience? Does anyone do this?

Everyone will have a different opinion on this (see https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47956 about saying 'GG' at all, for example).

The number of people will real bad intentions are quite low, so in doubt, I'd advice that you don't take stuff like that so bad.
I do it sometimes when the victory is obvious for me or my opponent (it's 100% sure that someone will get its 6th symbol in a few turns, are win militarily; I don't do it for points because it cannot be checked so quickly). The fast pace of this game in BGA means that my opponent will quickly understand the situation, if it's not the case already.
.. Although I agree that when I'm on the receiving end, it can be a little frustrating, because it amplifies the defeat. But that's part of the game.

I appreciate your thoughtful response. What you're saying makes sense. It is dependent on the person and, like you say, most people here are good

The only pushback I offer is this - imagine playing on a team, say, basketball, and before the game officially ends, a player from the other teams says, "good game."

That would not be acceptable given the rules of sportsmanship.

Yes, I understand some games can.be predicted given the situation, but also, for respect of your opponent, Id recommend waiting until the game has concluded. Thanks for the dialogue.

I also understand your point of view, but that just illustrate that different people view different things as being 'good sportsmanship'.
There are also different environements where the 'accepted rules' are different, and a board game played on the Internet is not the same as a sport event (where, by the rules, you have to play until the end).

I like to play my games until the end, even if they are lost, even in tournaments. Some people prefer surrendering as soon as their loss is certain, and even think that it's respectful to the opponent to do it. Even here, there are people that consider it good sportsmanship to do it one way, while others consider it good sportsmanship to do it the other way.

I always do this because I play turn-based games and I figure that, as soon as my opponent makes the winning move, they will not open the game again, so I want to leave them a parting comment. I do it to be courteous. It never occurred to me that it would be interpreted otherwise, so I am glad to find this forum post so that I hear other opinions.

I tend to take it as someone just being nice since if you didn't play with them there would be no game.

I tend to put it on games that are turn based as it could be some time before the opponent sees it and if you have multiple tables on the go it just means you dont forget to acknowledge the game

I look at it as bad sportsmanship if the person writes it long before the end of the game. That sounds more like a taunt. I have played against a few blokes like that and when they lose even after this then they just vent out their frustrations on chat.

I think they believe the game is almost finished and that they enjoyed it, or at least that they want to convey that they enjoyed it, whether or not it's true.

I always say "gg" on my last turn when I'm about to lose, or if the game is tied and we're going to civil. I'll never say gg before I'm about to win in military/science, just because of people like OP who might interpret it wrong :D Even though I'm the last person to taunt.
