I am playing a friendly game and I have gone first each time, what decides who goes first? In person this is decided by who roles the highest number but I didn't see that in the game logs

I suppose BoardGameArena is playing with backgammon rules, so the Website throws a dice for each player(WHICH WE DON'T SEE THE ACTION NOR KNOW THE DICE ROLL) and the higher number decides who goes first. I was coming here exactly to say BoardGameArena should make it known what the rolls are as to why I started 4 times my last match and my opponent asked why, thus I said I was cheating which he didn't find funny.

What difference would that make?
a) You won, you go first.
b) You rolled a 6. You won, you go first.

(WHICH WE DON'T SEE THE ACTION NOR KNOW THE DICE ROLL)
We do know the dice roll.
Both players roll 1 die, higher roll starts using the dice that were just rolled. So if you're starting and your first turn is 3 and 5. That means you rolled a 5 and your opponent rolled a 3.
This is also why you can never start the game with a double. If both roll the same, you roll again until a starting player is determined.
