Ūnane was inspired by the ancient Hawaiian game of Kōnane, also known as Hawaiian Checkers.

True to the spirit of Kōnane, Ūnane is played on a rectangular board initially filled with a checkerboard pattern of black and white stones. And like Kōnane, Ūnane has short range captures and is extremely simple.

GOAL Have only one group of your stones on the board. [If both players' groups are unified simultaneously, the player on turn wins.]

PLAY Either move to capture an orthogonally adjacent enemy stone, or remove one of your own stones which has no orthogonal adjacencies with enemy stones. [Ūnane uses the pie rule for balance.]

Ūnane has a sister game, Invector, in which the goal is annihilation, not unification.
