The game starts with a randomly selected player, who is given the stating player marker.
The starting player places the starting player marker in the center of the table and then takes the first turn.

If you are the first player in this round to pick tiles from the center of the table, also take the starting player marker and place it onto the leftmost free space of your floor line.
https://cdn.1j1ju.com/medias/03/14/fd-azul-rulebook.pdf Page 3 tells us that the first player to take from the center of the board will start the next round, in exchange for taking a floor line spot for their troubles.

One cannot understand.I feel mistreated. Last count, 9 the other player, 2 for me. This is a hanycap.

Must be nice, to only count the ones against you and ignore all the times it worked in your favor, to go "oh my, much handicap!".

In Ark Nova I was second player 10 times in 12 games. Guess what happened next?
I was first player two times in the next 3 games.
The universe is not going to just magically alternate between player 1 and player 2 in small sample sizes.
