Tutorial : Picking between card or board bonus

After doing ( part of the tutorial) I was confused when I started a solo game.
I played a card, but when I did the gather stone from the board placement I could no longer activate the character I just played.
I checked the rules and this is correct, but for me the tutorial didnt really make this clear you don't get to do both
( In the tutorial the character you play has a build action which can't be used)
Another thing is the tutorial broke down on me when I clicked the war banner track bonus a step too soon. I couldn't undo and when I got to the step where I needed to click it the option no longer appeared.
