Normally, it is random.

When you use the "rematch" functionality, in most games, starting player passes to the "next" player (while player order / seating is kept).
(I don't know if "next" necessarily means clockwise or what. But it's supposed to rotate. Or alternate, when there's only two players)

The paradox of randomness is that, statistically, there's going to be people who get the short end of the stick and end up at the less favorable position a disproportionally high amount of the time.

On one hand, we want every draw to be purely random, because that's what seems fair. On the other hand, when we look at a player's history and notice that they've been very unlucky during their whole time on the site, that doesn't seem fair either.

It's like a whole new type of discrimination. Not a discrimination that is chosen or wanted by anyone, not a discrimination that is based on a person's traits and where we can predict future discrimination, but instead a totally uncontrollable one where it is simply a matter of "fate" choosing to target and keep targeting a person.

We can tell this person that they can just keep playing and there's no reason they'll keep being more unlucky than anyone else. Yet at the same time, there is no guarantee they won't keep being unlucky either.
