Why don't players with the same Arena status play against each other in Arena mode? Today, I had to face Diamond-ranked players three times while in the Bronze Arena. That isn't fun, and it doesn't exactly foster a sense of community.

Depending on the size of the player pool that might be the only way to match players in a reasonable time. Otherwise a player who reaches diamond early in the season has no one they can play against until another player also reaches diamond, and then they can only play against each other. A player joining late in the season might have difficulty finding other bronze opponents.
As I understand it the match making system does try to find players closer to your tier, and expands the search when it can't find anyone.

In non-arena games you can restrict the table to players with similar ELO as you. What is it you are expecting from Arena that you won't get at a regular table?

You can add a filter to only be matched with people in your tier. By tier, I mean bronze, silver, etc. You can't filter by Elo or AES. But it may add significantly to your wait time, as Cile mentioned.

It doesn't really matter, since the league points/Arena points gained or lost already account for that.

Sure, it may not be fun to lose 90% of the time. But you have to think of it like I said, that the effects on your own ranking are no different than if you were playing similar level players. You just have to give it your all and maximize those games as best as you can. And if you do better than expected, it will have great results on your rank.

They asked for the system to properly pair them at their level. They did not mention any concern over how the rating was exchanged, or that they even wanted to improve their rank in the first place.
