Euchre Trump question

Hello,
Do you know why sometimes, when you pass on the turned-up trump suit, there are only 2 trump suits to choose from instead of 3 ? I encountered this situation in a previous game in the 2-player version of Euchre. Which rule point / game variant is this about ?
