Best of 3/5/7

Hey everyone!

I truly believe that there are some games where it makes sense to play multiple games per matchup to determine the better player. Especially if you limit your tournament to a specific ELO range, I think this could make tournaments even more fun and engaging for everyone involved.

A few examples of games where I think this could work really well:

- Zenith (few games with (un-)lucky card draw)
- Revive (Broken Vukuntur Sun)

Has this idea been discussed before? And would it be possible to introduce a Best-of-X format for tournaments on BGA?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, and have a great day!

Tim

You can already make something like that, by setting up a Swiss system stage where there are only 2 players and the desired number of games.

It isn't technically defined as a BO, just a subset of Swiss tournaments, but it comes down to the same thing.

Now, it's unclear to me if this can only be done as a single thing or as a second stage showdown between two qualifying players (that's the instances of how I've seen it happen), or if it's possible to set up many such confrontations happening in the same stage of a tournament.

It would, tournaments are crying out for a major overhaul to add things like this.

There's a number of things that should be added, leagues (and then the ability to control the settings around each week of the league), Swiss with cut to top x (basically how any Swiss works in real life), general greater flexibility, where currently the system is so rigid, that it all falls apart if you don't hit exact numbers. This is particularly for example say you set the max player count to 6, and min to 4 in a tournament, if you have 40 players left it will set 6 tables of 6, 1 of 4, which is just quite obviously not the best way to do it, it should set either 8 tables of 5, or 5 tables of 6, 2 tables of 5, basically the system should prioritise fairness, and also recognise what numbers this will leave for later rounds for your tournament to work properly. You should also be able to do things like variable qualifiers per round, where you'd have say 2 qualify per round early into 3 per round later.

There's plenty of very quick games where could argue the rounds should be best of 3, best of 5 etc., which is also how a number of real life tournaments work.
