What happened to five lines to win? I thought that made it more interesting than three.

Looks like it is there - see the Long Game option "In 2/3-player games, 5/4 columns are required to win."

I assume they're referring to the Arena changes, as per the latest update you can see referenced on the game page. This seems likely given its a recent change that matches the OP's question and the fact the OP plays in Arena.
