There seems to be a misunderstanding in the English text. I don't want to change it on my own.

In the following strings:

Fire workers (+50 fiorini)
${player_name} fires workers

it should be "send out" instead of "fire"

Send out workers (+50 fiorini)
${player_name} sends out workers

It had been correct once, but someone changed it.

Except that fireing workers and earning money isn't very plausible the "send out" is confirmed by the official manuals (EN, D, IT) and the French translation on BGA.
