I think you should play the Shark and the Swimmer immediately, or there's a great chance you'll be stuck with them until the end of the game, or your opponent could steal one of them.

I never give up, even if I'm losing 5-39. I just switch up my tactics and focus on collecting four mermaids, taking as many cards as I can with the help of boats, fish, sharks, and so on.
