Re: Is there a more toxic game than Spades?

One last subject. I can have the exact same hand, and i can bid several different ways. What if i am first to bid? What if i am 3rd? What if they nilled? What if i bid last? What if opps bid would put them over 500? What if I bid 1 more and we can get to 500? What if they have 459? What if we have 4...

Re: Is there a more toxic game than Spades?

Also, regarding bidding. Bidding is more than counting possible automatic tricks. Also, Franks comments about underbidding. Bidding is about odds. If you have 2 aces and all the rest are 3-9…you take that into account. If you lose an ace, you have no chance to win another trick. But if you have 2 ac...

Re: Is there a more toxic game than Spades?

Responding to Franks comments. I will put up my skill and record versus anyone. 11 bid. Yes. You should start every 11 bid with the intent to take every trick. Why? Many reasons. You could have A92 clubs. Perfectly fine to bid that. But lets say you toss a queen of hearts to avoid bags and plan on t...
Your choice of course; I cannot view the game unless you provide the link to the table, and I understand if you don't feel comfortable doing that. I like viewing replays of interesting or unusual hands. Apologies in advance if this is an intrusive request.
No way for me to remember...

Re: 1st rule of trick (trump games) - Lead Spades!

If your partner has depended on trumping multiple short suits when making their bid the strategy of clearing trump may backfire. It is a good strategy to discount your bid if you are very short in spades. When you make a bid, you should always ask "can i make my bid if someone leads spades 3x ...

Re: 1st rule of trick (trump games) - Lead Spades!

If it is the last hand of the game and you have to set to stay in the game, you should always force a 14 bid (if you cannot bag them or nil to win).
This maximizes your points and lessens your bags.

There is no prize for 2nd, so you if you need to set them to stay in the game, you bid 14.

Re: Is there a more toxic game than Spades?

To Merlin Bags are rarely bad. It is rare for 1 team to lose simply cause they had 10 bags. More likely it is cards or sets. So if u dont try for sets you are allowing luck to dictate wins and losses. Here is the math most dont understand. 19 bags is -81 pts. -100 +19 If u set a 4 bid, they dont gai...

Re: Is there a more toxic game than Spades?

The issue is….most players in arena dont know the fundamentals so almost every 11 bid is available to be a set. It is rare to play a game with 4 strong players. And if that is the case, none of them are going to duck a trick early on…. Cause good players win games on sets or luck of cards. Winning a...

Re: 1st rule of trick (trump games) - Lead Spades!

Good point about players who may never played other trick games… Also, a good point that a lot of people dont even realize what they are missing… A lot of players really think it is 2 individual bids and not a team bid. I often overbid to steal tricks based on what i see….if a partner just takes the...

Re: 1st rule of trick (trump games) - Lead Spades!

Happened again.

Someone had 8 bid.

They chose to lead non-spades after trump was broken.

The little bid got to cross trump with their loser spades and set the 8 bid.

Of course, the person broke the fundamental rule and said “i know what i am doing, i have played spades for 30 years….”
