Well every players goal is to win the game. So outlaw going after the sheriff allies makes sense to give them better odds of outnumbering the sheriff and their allies.

It's an interesting strategy to be vague on your role if you can't shoot your target. Hopefully being passive will get you in a situation where you can kill one of the helpers when it's time.
