They cannot. Corners can, but edges cannot. That would make it really hard (or maybe impossible?) to ensure that the solution can be found within the possible questions. So instead of asking for a clue and then letting the other player ask for the final clue, submit a response and win, we both play dumb so not to give the win to the ot...
