Board Game Arena

I sat watching another players time run out then got a message I didnt take my turn...

Is there a way to see someone's skill level before playing a game? I am pre-beginner and don't feel that i would learn much playing a good player, nor would I be much fun for them.

Maybe just to learn the process of play without getting into multi round commitments.
Im having a hard time keeping up and understanding rules of games I was sure I knew how to play...

I dont understand how to figure out what version of a game I was in. I thought I was playing regular checkers but the opponent was jumping backwards. How was that possible?
How can I try to figure out what is happening without getting penalized while doing so?
Beginning to question this app.
