Players playing quicker formats get the guru status faster. And they choose the format they prefer. Hence, quicker formats (usually low player count) are used in the arena.

You can concede 1 vs 1 game. In some tournament formats, the score is used as tiebreaker, so I guess conceding may be disabled. If course, chess doesn't have score, so there that is pointless.

Anyone can modify the tips. If you play by the rules (both game and BGA), then l don't see any unsportmanship.

How I believe the algorithm works is that it starts from the leader, and tries to find an opponent that the leader has not yet been played against.
