Sponsors used to be the thing I never upgraded, but I saw people say it was one of the best things to upgrade first -- since then I started upgrading it first or second (after build) and I think it's great. If you think it's useless, I would recommend trying to use it more and see what you think.

This would be especially useful for things like 2 player Kingdom Builder where the game is sometimes decided before the halfway point but you have to keep playing for no purpose.

That's possible -- the reporting system doesn't really work if you try it for this person since all the potential options lead to dead-ends, and it's not obvious that you should e-mail one of them to complain about something that can't be reported through the system.
