There are private red thumbs („I dont want to play with this player anymore“, for whatever justified or stupid reason), which don‘t count for your karma level.
Public red thumbs (which can give you a karma drop indeed, if you get too many) are limited: You only can give 1 public red thumb per 5 green thumbs that you have given. Accordingly, public red thumbs are too scarce to be wasted on someone that doesnt really deserve it.

That does seem like a reasonable enough reason and way of limiting any one players ability to karma drop their opponents indeed. Thanks for the info!

I'll have to take your word for since I'm new here, but what's to stop anyones karma from plummeting because they got paired with a bunch of consecutive players who just downvote you for any reason (they lost, you used "too" much time not relative to the timer going negative but their own idea of too much", or any other silly reason).

I'm pleasantly surprised to know that it does work very well in practice though.
I mean that technically could happen I suppose, although one individual can only give out so many red thumbs vs green thumbs, so that is part of what forces players to calibrate what behavior they can find acceptable and not. It's really hard for any player to just give out a ton of red thumbs to like everyone they play.

I guess the flip of your question is who would bother just red thumbing a bunch of players and how many of those sort of people do you think there are on this site?

The answer is that sort of behavior is not at all prevalent. You won't run in to just random red thumbs. Even if you occasionally do get one or two, it won't hurt your karma significantly. You have to be a pretty problematic player to dip below karma thresholds honestly--most commonly by abandoning games or going over your clock a lot, or being an ***** in the the chat. Even then players can have surprisingly decent karma ratings still.

(It doesn't help that you can abandon a multiplayer 2 hour game like Terra Mystica or Agricola an hour in to it and waste a collective 3 hours of other players time and then wipe out that penalty by playing like 10 minutes of 2 player Can't Stop which is like 5 games)

*moderator edit: please remember that BGA is a family-friendly platform and refrain from using curse words. thanks.

========Edit. Sigh, should have looked at previous replies, rather than believing the end of the page was the end of the thread....

Anyway, since I wrote it, here's my $0.02..... Feel free to skip it, as it was said before.

While karma can be limited because of a high red:green thumb ratio, it does not drop it that low; I think it mans that you can have a max 70% karma which still allows you to find games.
Additionally, this is only from public red thumbs. Private red thumbs do not affect this ratio. And there aren't an infinite number of public red thumbs available; only one can be given for every (5?) green thumbs that you give, so running into a series of people who have red thumbs to give is rare. Not saying it doesn't happen (check the Can't Stop and Backgammon boards on rare probability events happening....), but that it normally is met with the other side of luck fairly quickly.

Sorry but how can u pay so much notice to that bad reputation title gave to certain players lol. It doesn't mean that because certain players as me sometime get that reputation, that we are bad. Let me tell u none of us are angels and perfect. If I see a player with bad reputation I would still play them because they never did nothing wrong to me directly . So not to me to judge. Am going to get bad reputations because got expelled again but why I was just a little bit long to take my go because .

I needed to go down stairs to let cat out as he can't open flat door nd entrance building door him self as he's a cat but he can climb thru balcony and enter thru kitchen window . So he comeback when he feel like sometime every 10 15 minutes but ask to go back out straight away so in the days
I run stairs a lot
Am 54 years old. Personally I think some of u are so impatient nd not fair on others. Try to understand playing players online them players at times might encounter private probs at time of the game. I try to be as fast I could. But anyway ty to expelled me lol ( sorry been sarcastic)
