Cheating

Post by davidr0607 »

I was leading 26-12 in a Martian dice tournament (need 25 to win) and the cheating opponent waits out the time and wins on time. She has no hope of winning. How is this allowed? I live in Australia so slept through the start of the match. That is the only reason I "lost". This is a joke. Was thinking of going Premium but not going to do that on a system that allows cheaters to prosper.

And how is cheating in any way ? Would a chess player say the other is cheating if he lose over time, even if he had a better position ?? That's just the rules of the game you accepted to play. Try other format if this one does not suit you.

How is it not cheating? If you go "I can't win this game properly so I will wait until times runs out and win by default" that is straight up cheating. You are taking advantage of a crazy system that doesn't award the player who is winning. In chess, you would get a draw, not a lose. And believe me I won't be entering anymore tournaments run by Sheffield_refugee as he seems to condone cheating.

Fixed time tournaments are not a good idea, I don't know why they are the default setting. Especially the short ones. It throws up a lot of stupid stuff for a lot of games.

How can you play chess if the game might be over in 4 moves, but also might need 100. A fixed time limit is absurd.

I played in a round-robin draughts tournament once, and about half the games automatically timed out even though everyone was happily playing out the games.
It seems like the fixed time limit is more in tune with elimination and rounds, but not round-robin.

As someone who used to play competitive chess (20+ years ago), this is categorically not true. If you run out of time, you lose. It doesn't matter if your next move would have been to checkmate the opponent - if your clock runs out of time before you can make the move, you lose.

It's not dissimilar on BGA - if you run over your clock, the opponent(s) are allowed to kick you out of the game. Rather than whining about it - and, still worse, accuse your opponent of "cheating" (there are those who would say this was unsporting - personally I wish BGA just made it an autoloss so there was no element of personal decision in it at all) - you would do better to acknowledge that you took too long over your moves and need to get quicker next time. If you don't like handling time pressure (I don't either when I'm just playing boardgames for fun and interest) then play games without a time limit, or at least with a much larger time limit.

What you have written there clearly shows you haven't read what I wrote so I'm not gonna bother.

Still not cheating, even though i wouldn't like this attitude either. He did not brake any rules.

The problem is that the time system allows this, and winning tournament games by using less time (when both players are within time) is nonsense. But apparently that's the way people want to do tournaments on BGA... Had same issue when I've lost 8 hours of my playing time on Martian Dice, and player didn't even try to take turns- they were online for hours but didn't make any moves.

if players exceed time, it's acceptable to call it a loss, but when both players are within the time limit, then it's just nonsense

I've noticed a similar tricks and curious behaviours in some tournament games.

Opponents appear to be online for hours but don't play , then play a move shortly after I log out. Also, some unsporting kicking from the game if time is out when I am winning. Never get booted if I'm likely to lose!

Some of the time limits are too short and take no consideration of major time zone difference.

The chess game analogy is fair _if_ you're in the same time zone!

It's straight up NOT cheating.
