Real-Time Games with Long Turns?

Post by Pteratato »

Hey, guys! I like to play games while working on chores, but I prefer real-time games because I keep getting stuck in forever turn-based games.

What are some of your favorite real-time games that still take awhile to go around the table? Currently I'm using 4-player Azul, but I'm new to BGA and haven't played a lot of different games. Hoping to get some suggestions!

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure if I understand you the right way: You ask for games with some minutes of downtime before your next turn? Interesting question, most players prefer the opposite ;)

So you might do this: When you open up a table for a new game, you can choose in the game options (left side) between slow, medium or fast play. But this is only the maximum time per turn. On the right side you can select the experience of the other players. If you set it on "beginners" they will probably take more time per turn. Or join tables with slow play / beginners. Play games with 4 or more players (but not simultanous games like 7 Wonders, 6 nimmt or Similo!) for a longer pause between your turns. You can filter the list of games https://boardgamearena.com/gamelist for number of players.

There are also games with a longer regular time per turn (like Deus or Signorie), but they are also rather complex and you might need the time to plan your next turn in between. So I am not sure if those will fit your needs.

I'm partly with you on this. I prefer playing real-time, not because turn-based is particularly inconvenient, but because the game then spreads out into my life and thinking in between turns. I suppose this is because I'm somewhat AP prone (which of course makes it ironic I'm turning to RT games) and also take my board games fairly seriously. Sometimes some tricky problem in a turn-based game has literally robbed me of restful sleep! Obviously when playing RT I am forced by the timer to modify my behaviour, and not drag things out as I would otherwise likely do. I also try (though sometimes fail) to be considerate to other players in real time play, and not unnecessarily slow things down. But sadly my definition of necessary thinking time is probably not the same as others!

Recently playing Deus I took some horrendous times against a friend playing turn-based as a real-time experience. I think now I'm getting those somewhat under control as I get more used to the game and the interface. But I still regularly take double or sometimes even more my opponents time, even in RT play.
